What is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and how is it different from other cloud providers?

OCI is Oracle’s cloud platform that provides IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS services. It differentiates itself by offering bare metal compute, Autonomous Database, and a strong focus on enterprise workloads (like Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards). OCI also has a flat and predictable pricing model, unlike some competitors that charge extra for data transfer within the same region.

What are Compartments in OCI and why are they important?

Compartments are logical containers used to organize and isolate resources in OCI.

  • They allow fine-grained access control through IAM policies.
  • Help in cost tracking and billing by organizing resources.
  • Support resource segregation (e.g., separating Dev, Test, and Prod environments).
What is a Virtual Cloud Network (VCN) in OCI?

A VCN is a software-defined private network inside OCI that is similar to a traditional on-premises data center network.

It includes subnets, route tables, gateways (Internet, NAT, Service, DRG), and security lists/NSGs.
VCNs are region-specific and can be connected with on-premises networks using VPN or FastConnect.

How does High Availability (HA) work in OCI?

OCI provides HA through:

  • Regions → Independent geographic locations.
  • Availability Domains (ADs) → Physically separate data centers within a region.
  • Fault Domains (FDs) → Logical groupings within an AD to isolate workloads.
    This ensures that if one FD or AD goes down, workloads can failover to another, maintaining uptime.
What is Oracle Autonomous Database in OCI?

Oracle Autonomous Database is a self-driving, self-securing, and self-repairing database.

  • It uses AI/ML to automate patching, scaling, and tuning.
  • Available in two types:
    • ATP (Autonomous Transaction Processing) for OLTP workloads.
    • ADW (Autonomous Data Warehouse) for analytics and reporting.
  • Reduces administrative overhead and increases performance/security.
