SSAS Training FAQ'S

What is SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)? List out the features?

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Analysis Services (SSAS) offers online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining capabilities for business intelligence applications. Analysis Services supports OLAP by enabling us to create, develop, and manage multidimensional structures that include data generated from other data sources, such as relational databases. Analysis Services provides us with the ability to develop, create, and visualize data mining models that are constructed from other data sources by utilizing a wide range of industry-standard data mining algorithms.

Some of the key features are:

1. Ease of use with a lot of wizards and designers.
2. Flexible data model creation and management
3. Scalable architecture to handle OLAP
4. Provides integration of administration tools, data sources, security, caching, reporting, etc.

What is the difference between SSAS 2005 and SSAS2008?
  1. A blank cube cannot be created in 2005, however, it is possible to do it in 2008.
  2. The Attribute Relationships tab in the Dimension Designer is a new tool in Analysis Services 2008 to implement attribute relationships, which are complicated in SSAS 2005.
  3. In 2005, we are limited to only 2000 divisions per Measure Group, and in 2008, that restriction is lifted.
What is OLAP? How is it different from OLTP?
  1. On-line analytical processing is known as OLAP. It is a feature or a group of technologies that enables end users to efficiently access data from data warehouses using a variety of tools, including Microsoft Excel, Reporting Services, and numerous other outside business intelligence applications.
  2. OLTP is characterized by less frequent data updates and contains past data; it is utilized for analysis to support daily business decisions. OLTP (On-Line Transactional Processing), on the other hand, is used to support daily business operations. It is characterized by frequent data updates, contains the most recent data, and only contains a small amount of historical data based on the retention policy determined by business needs.
What is a Data Source? What are the different data sources supported by SSAS?

The connection details needed by SSAS to connect to the underlying database and load the data into SSAS during processing are contained in A-DATA SOURCE. Apart from other attributes like Query timeout, Isolation, etc., a data source primarily comprises the following data:

  1. Provider
  2. Server Name
  3. Database Name
  4. Impersonation Information

Both .Net and OLE DB providers are supported by SSAS. The key sources that SSAS supports are the ones listed below: SQL Server, MS Access, Oracle, Teradata, IBM DB2, and any other relational database that has the proper OLE DB provider.
